Minority Health Funding Announcement

U.S. Department of Health & Human Services' Region VII Office of Minority Health would like to announce three Fiscal Year 2011 funding opportunities.

 

1. Youth and Teen Health Summit

            The Youth and Teen Health Summit is a Peer Education Program which is a program of the Region VII Office of Minority Health designed to educate youth aged 9 – 18. Utilizing small group, role playing, and interactive learning methods, youth are provided with evidence based health information and skills development. The Summit's topics include: decision making, self esteem, and leadership, obesity, accident prevention, suicide prevention, alcohol/substance/tobacco prevention, and infectious disease prevention. Following the Summit, the youth pledge to become peer educators and commit to holding a minimum of 3 educational activities during the course of the year.

            Eligible to Apply: Community and Faith Based Organizations, Tribal Organizations, Local Health Departments, Educational Entities (Middle School, High School, College, and University)

            Number of Contracts to be funded: Ten $500.00 contracts are being offered

 

2. Urban Garden Development

            To address the nutritional needs of communities as they work to improve health status and decrease obesity rates, the Urban Garden Project was created as a means of addressing food deserts within the urban core.

The Region VII Office of Minority Health will fund communities that want to develop, continue, or expand urban garden projects that will grow fruits and vegetables for consumption by the communities where the gardens are located.  The gardens should engage local community members and encourage inner city youth participation.

            Eligible to Apply: Community Block Associations, Community Organizations, Faith Based Organizations, Tribal Communities, and Youth Groups

            Number of Contracts to be funded: Four $1,000.00 contracts are being offered.

 

3. Bi-National Health Week Health Fair Funding

            Bi-National Health Week is an annual week of health awareness and screenings for Latino communities. During Bi-National Health Week, communities engage in health education, health screening, and prevention activities with the purpose of improving awareness and health literacy.

            Eligible to Apply: Community and Faith Based Organizations and Community Health Centers. Scheduled activities must be coordinated through the Consulate of Mexico in Kansas City, MO for Kansas and Missouri activities or the Consulate of Mexico in Omaha, NE for Nebraska and Iowa activities.

            Number of Contracts to be funded: Ten $500.00 contracts are being offered.

 

Important Dates:

·         April 29, 2011 – May 13, 2011 Letters of interest will be accepted

·         May 27, 2011 – Approved Organizations will be notified of their approval and invited to complete a funding contract.

·         June 20, 2011 – Funding Contract deadline. Contract due by 12:00 a.m. CST

 

Document Submission:

All documents must be submitted via e-mail to Ms. Janet Greene at janet.greene@hhs.gov

 

Project Planning and Completion:

All funded projects must begin program planning prior to August 31, 2011 and all projects must be completed by December 2011.

 

Payments:

Project funding will occur by September 30, 2011.

 

Eligibility:

·         Organizations submitting a Letter of Interest must possess a; 

o   Data Unique Number (DUNS) http://smallbusiness2.dnb.com/ and be registered with

o   Central Contract Registration (CCR) https://www.bpn.gov/CCR/default.aspx

·         Meet the eligibility criteria for each of the funding announcements.

·         Programming must occur within the States of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, or Nebraska.

 

Letter of Interest:

Letters of interest must include the following information:

1.    DUNS number

2.    Funding Contract of Interest
