United Way of Greater Topeka announces an upcoming release of Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for 2013 funding.
Four funding opportunities will be available on September 5, 2012. Three of the available grants are strategy-based opportunities focused on the 10-year community goals. The fourth opportunity addresses Basic Needs. Additional opportunities to apply for funding will be available after the first quarter of 2013. The RFP process is open to eligible charitable organizations as designated by IRS code 170 that provide services in Shawnee and Jefferson counties (contact United Way for specific details).
Requests for Proposals will be released for the following areas:
- School Readiness Goal:
Increase by 50 percent the number of children who have the pre-literacy skills necessary to start Kindergarten- Funded Strategy: Children from the target area will participate in high-quality home visitation programs with a focus on pre-literacy.

- Substance Abuse Goal:
Reduce by 20 percent the number of sixth through 12th graders that illegally use substances (cigarettes, marijuana and alcohol).- Funded Strategy: Youth are engaged and supported in their efforts to keep themselves alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana free through opportunities to learn and practice healthy behaviors.

Online Proposal Process
The Requests for Proposals will be available to organizations via an online community investment management system on Wednesday, September 5, 2012. Free training to learn how to use the online system is available to any eligible organization interested in applying for funding on Wednesday, August 29 from 10 a.m. to noon. Information Meetings
Two Information Meetings will detail the RFP specifics and will be held on Wednesday, September 5 at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, 1515 Southwest 10th Avenue, Topeka. The first meeting is focused on Basic Needs Funding and will be from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. The second meeting is focused on Strategy Funding and will be 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Attendance is recommended and RSVPs are requested.
