Washburn Tech Establishes M-Tech

Topeka, Kan. – Washburn Tech, in cooperation with area food manufacturing companies, is launching a new training initiative called Manufacturing Technology or M-Tech. The program, in partnership with GO Topeka, provides intensive technology training to workers and links them to good jobs in the food manufacturing field. The pilot project through the Kansas Department of Commerce connects economic and workforce development under the new “Workforce Aligned with Industry Demand” (Workforce AID) initiative at Commerce.

M-Tech’s curriculum was developed under the guidance of area food manufacturers including Bimbo Bakeries, Del Monte, Frito-Lay, Hill’s Pet Nutrition and Mars Chocolate North America. Graduates are prepared for an entry-level production position with one of these companies and also are ready to earn a national industry credential, Certified Production Technician. For a limited time, funding from Commerce is available for adults who qualify.

“M-Tech provides training that is specifically targeted to meet the needs of our area manufacturers. Adults can complete this training quickly and be prepared for quality jobs while local companies remain competitive with a skilled workforce,” said Clark Coco, dean, Washburn Tech.

“This project will support a robust Kansas economy by preparing workers with the skills required by business. We are excited to support local prosperity with the first Workforce AID pilot project for these excellent Topeka regional companies.” said Pat George, secretary, Kansas Department of Commerce.

To enroll in M-Tech, contact Luci Zieman at Washburn Tech by calling 785.670.2373 or visit Gina Coffman (785.235.1622) at the Topeka Workforce Center. Pre-assessment tests are required before enrollment. -30-
