World Wide FlashMob: Dance for Kindness [Topeka]

WORLDWIDE FLASHMOB: Dance for Kindness
Topeka, KS – November 18th, 2012

Life Vest Inside is part of the World Kindness Movement and is organizing a World Wide FlashMob: Dance for Kindness on November 18th as part of the Global Celebrations that take place during World Kindness Week. This event will take place on the same day, to the same song and dance in Countries across the Globe: from the US to Australia, Chile to India, London to Canada and more countries joining the event daily.

Life Vest Inside is a non-profit organization dedicated to spreading kindness, empowering people, and building self-esteem and self-value. Life Vest Inside seeks to utilize the power of kindness to empower individuals with the strength and self-esteem needed to rise with dignity to their utmost potential.

The purpose of World Kindness Day is to look beyond ourselves, beyond the boundaries of our country, beyond our culture, our race, our religion; and realize we are citizens of the world.

To some, the world is filled with war, hatred, violence and hopelessness but we firmly believe that we have the power to fill this world with kindness, trust, hope and love.

The goal of Dance for Kindness is to promote kindness, human interaction and to help increase people's awareness and sensitivity to others. The event will involve a group of people coming together to inspire and instill kindness, love and respect in the hearts of viewers. The event is not solely about inspiration but taking that inspiration and turning it into action. After the performance, acts of kindness cards will be distributed in each location to illustrate that kindness can create a ripple effect whose reach has no boundaries. The effect of the dance doesn't end with the day but rather continues to live on through the video montage that will be created showcasing the Countries around the Globe raising their Hands for Kindness.

Our motto - Simple! "Never doubt that a small group of Committed DANCERS can Change the World, indeed it's the only thing that ever has. One Day, One Dance, One Heart!"

Funding Announcement for Veteran Services

VA Announces Availability of SSVF Funds

Applications due Feb. 1, 2013

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced the availability of funds for supportive services grants under the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) Program. The SSVF Program's purpose is to provide supportive services grants to private nonprofit organizations and consumer cooperatives who will coordinate or provide supportive services to very low-income veteran families who:

  • are residing in permanent housing,
  • are homeless and scheduled to become residents of permanent housing within a specified time period, or
  • after exiting permanent housing within a specified time period, are seeking other housing that is responsive to such very low-income veteran family's needs and preferences.

The top funding priority under this NOFA is for existing SSVF grantees seeking to renew their supportive services grants. Approximately $140 million of the up to $300 million available may be awarded depending on funding available under this priority. The second funding priority is for eligible entities applying for initial supportive services grants.

Applications for initial and renewal supportive services grants under the SSVF Program must be received by the SSVF Program Office by 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Feb. 1, 2013. In the interest of fairness to all competing applicants, this deadline is firm as to date and hour, and VA will treat as ineligible for consideration any application that is received after the deadline. Applicants should take this practice into account and make early submission of their materials to avoid any risk of loss of eligibility brought about by unanticipated delays, computer service outages, or other delivery-related problems.

To read the full NOFA from the Oct. 26, 2012 Federal Register, click here.

KS Voc Rehab Svcs. - Training Opportunity

From:   Michael Donnelly, Director, Kansas Rehabilitation Services (KRS)

As you may know, a priority of Kansas Rehabilitation Services is to increase the competitive, integrated employment of people with the most significant intellectual disabilities.  Our Great Expectations Initiative (GEI) is intended to identify and test promising practices in service delivery that will result in increased employment outcomes and reduced reliance on non-work day services, waiting lists or sub-minimum wage jobs.  GEI is currently being piloted by the Sedgwick County Developmental Disability Organization, Wichita, and the Disability Planning Organization of Kansas, Salina.

As part of the GEI effort, we are pleased to offer a free three-day internship on effective employment-focused service delivery strategies.  Topics include the discovery assessment process, job matching, job-site training and business partnerships.  A more detailed agenda is attached.  The internship will be taught by technical experts from the University of Kansas Center on Developmental Disabilities and the National Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Workplace Supports and Job Retention at Virginia Commonwealth University.

The training will be held as follows:

Celebrate the Diversity That Exists Within Feminism
Feminism is an issue that affects everyone, no matter one's gender, race, ethnicity, or orientation. However, all too often, the face of feminism is represented as a cisgender white woman. This year, the Kansas National Organization for Women is challenging that notion. We will be celebrating the diversity that exists within feminism at our Annual Conference titled Woman of Color and Allies. Here, we will hear several women of color share their perspectives of feminism in relation to issues such as abortion, economic justice, health, and government. Kansas NOW is proud to be co-sponsoring this event along with Wichita State University's FOCUS.

Pamela Merritt
Pamela also known in the blogging community as the "Angry Black Bitch" will provide commentary and lead a discussion about the movie "Trust Black Women".  Engage with Pamela as she sets about debunking the myth of "Black Genocide & Abortion".

Various Panelists...
Panel discussions covering health matters that disproportionately impact communities of color, and women of color in government.  Panelists to include Representatives from local and state government and representatives from local health organizations.
In his role as President of IBSA, Inc.,  Lazone has fought for policies of economic justice for women and minorities.
Described as a "policy engineer" by the African American activist community, Lazone will speak about women of color and economic justice.
