Forum on Disproportionate Minority Contact in the Juvenile Justice System 

The state of Kansas is undertaking a statewide assessment on the extent to which minority youth are overrepresented in the juvenile justice system. We need your input! Join us for a community event to discuss the preliminary findings of the research study, to share your thoughts on the topic, and to help guide the next steps for Kansas in addressing this complex issue.

Disproportionate Minority Contact (DMC) occurs when minority youth come into contact with the juvenile justice system at a higher rate than their white counterparts. To address this concern, Kansas has started an initiative that will allow communities to identify the youth that are moving through the juvenile justice system, evaluate each step (or decision point) in the process, and to determine if and where disproportionality exists. If disproportionality does exist, communities are expected to analyze the reasons why and develop intervention strategies to reduce disparities.
